What is a risk? You can say it’s a dark tunnel before you reach the end of it. It’s a storm before you can see a rainbow. In other words, it’s a path of uncertainties and insecurities before something great happens. Some people trek on that potholed trail while others prefer to stay. Why put everything on something that you are not even sure will be successful or not. Why take a risk? If you look at it from another angle, risks make you reach places that your mind couldn’t have comprehended it. If you think that only those people that have can take a risk which is already millionaires, then you are wrong.
I look at my Dad and Mom when they decided to take THE risk and open their company back in 1988. We lived in a trailer park and my Dad worked in the construction industry building condos on the beach. One day my Dad was working on his boat and the guy who lived in the trailer behind us was also working on his boat. So of course, they started the banter of boat ownership and the endless upkeep. But the discovered a lot more that made an impact on our future. There were three of us kids and my brother and I were in sports - baseball and football, so there was a lot of money needed to participate. As a contractor/architect, my Dad drew house plans for other people to earn extra money to help support our activities. The guy my dad was talking to was a framer by trade and the more they talked, they realized that he has been building houses for a contractor that my Dad drew plans for. They decided, “hey why don’t we do this for ourselves and open a company that builds homes.” So, they did but it didn’t come without risk. This meant my dad was going to need to give up his job to start a company and don’t forget my parents had three kids at home they had to support. However, it didn’t stop them from opening the company and I am proud to say this company is still going strong to this day. As we consider the uncertainties of the future, we are confronted with a powerful temptation: the temptation of playing it safe. You see my dad could have played it safe but decided to take the risk and do something on his own. Dad could have been unwilling to move mountains, fret over the molehills he would for sure face, unwilling to entertain great hopes for tomorrow, unwilling to trust God in his steps that he was about to take. But I watched my Dad trust God and his faith to make this step not just for him but for his family. Today, ask God for courage to step beyond the boundaries of your doubts. Ask him to guide you to a place where you can realize your full potential-a place where you are freed from fair of failure. Ask Him to do his part, and promise you will do you part. Don’t ask him to lead you to a “safe” place; ask Him to lead you the “right” place. And remember: those two places are seldom the same. I’m so glad my Dad and Mom taught me and my brother and sister to take risk but most important trust God when we do.
